Bureau of Indian Standards Introduces New Safety and Quality Standards for Electric Vehicles

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has announced two new standards, IS 18590: 2024 and IS 18606: 2024, to bolster the safety and quality of electric vehicles (EVs) in India.

These standards apply to L, M, and N categories of EVs, covering two-wheelers, four-wheelers, and goods trucks, respectively.

According to BIS, the new standards mandate rigorous safety and performance requirements for critical components of electric vehicles, particularly focusing on powertrains and batteries.

IS 18590: 2024 sets forth stringent safety protocols for EV powertrains, which include the motor, battery pack, and transmission system. This standard aims to reduce risks associated with the operation and maintenance of electric vehicles.

Meanwhile, IS 18606: 2024 establishes benchmarks for battery durability, thermal management, and safety features, enhancing the reliability and safety of EV batteries.

The department also highlighted the growing popularity of electric mobility beyond cars and trucks, with e-rickshaws and e-karts gaining traction across India.

To address this, BIS has introduced IS 18294: 2023, which establishes safety standards specifically for these vehicles.

These standards cover various aspects of construction and functionality, ensuring the safety of both drivers and passengers.

With the introduction of these new standards, BIS now has a total of 30 Indian Standards dedicated to electric vehicles and their accessories, including charging systems.

The introduction of IS 18590: 2024 and IS 18606: 2024 by BIS is expected to significantly enhance the safety and reliability of electric vehicles on Indian roads, addressing both consumer concerns and fostering greater adoption of clean energy transportation.
