Tamil Nadu Government Partners with Google to Establish ‘Tamil Nadu AI Labs’ in Chennai

The Tamil Nadu government has inked a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with tech giant Google to set up the ‘Tamil Nadu AI Labs’ in Chennai.

This partnership marks a major milestone in the state’s drive to enhance its technological capabilities and support its burgeoning startup ecosystem.

Industries Minister TRB Rajaa announced the development on social media platform X, stating, “During our visit to Google HQ today, we signed an MoU to set up ‘#TamilNaduAILabs’ at Guidance_TN in Chennai, in partnership with Google!”

The collaboration aims to empower 2 million young people with AI skills through the Naan Mudhalvan programme.

Additionally, the partnership will foster collaboration with startups, support micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), and strengthen the rural economy by integrating AI technologies.

This agreement is one of 6 MoUs signed during Chief Minister M K Stalin’s visit to the United States, attracting a total investment of INR 900 crore.

These investments are expected to generate over 4,000 high-quality jobs in the state.

Among the major investments secured is Nokia’s R&D center in Siruseri, PayPal’s expansion of its AI ML focused development center in Chennai, and advanced semiconductor innovations led by Microchip and Yield Engineering Systems in Coimbatore.

Furthermore, Applied Materials will establish an advanced AI tech development center, while Infinx will open a new technology center in Madurai.

Minister Rajaa emphasized that with Chief Minister Stalin’s visit, Tamil Nadu is poised to lead a new era of technological innovation in research and development (R&D), semiconductor design, and AI, further solidifying its position as a premier destination for tech investment in India.

The partnership comes at a time when big tech companies are increasingly investing in India, driven by the country’s rapid post-pandemic digital transformation.
