Founded in 2020 by entrepreneurs Shreyans Kokra and Dhruv Gupta, Canvaloop is revolutionizing the textile industry with its innovative approach to sustainability.
Based in Surat, Gujarat, the startup is committed to addressing the dual challenges of textile pollution and agricultural waste by transforming unused agricultural residue into high-quality, textile-grade fibers and yarns.
Textile Pollution and Agricultural Waste
Textile production is known to be the second most polluting industry globally, contributing significantly to air and water pollution.
As the demand for fast fashion surges, the environmental impact of this sector is poised to reach a staggering $52 billion by 2030, with 24% of this pollution occurring at the raw material stage.
Concurrently, India faces a severe agricultural waste crisis, with over 90 million tonnes burned each year.
This practice not only exacerbates air pollution—contributing to 40% of PM2.5 pollution in Delhi—but also poses significant health risks to the population.
Recognizing these intertwined issues, Canvaloop set out to create a closed-loop system that converts agricultural waste into sustainable textile products, thus reducing the reliance on environmentally harmful materials like cotton and synthetic fibers.
Innovative Solutions: A Unique Production Process
Canvaloop employs a proprietary, eco-friendly, three-step process to convert agro-waste into fibers.
The journey begins with the collection of agricultural waste from crops such as hemp, banana, and pineapple.
Through a mechanical extraction method called decortication, Canvaloop separates the valuable fibers from the waste.
The innovative Canvaloop technology then processes these fibers without the use of solvents, relying instead on bio-waste for heat and ensuring that all water is recycled back into the system.
The result? High-quality fibers that consume 99% less water and 76% less energy than traditional cotton, while also reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 88%.
These fibers are not only sustainable but also fully compatible with existing textile infrastructure, allowing for seamless integration into the fashion industry.
A Vision for the Future
Canvaloop’s mission extends beyond just creating sustainable materials; it aims to promote a circular economy within the fashion industry.
By focusing on end-to-end traceability, the company ensures that clients and consumers can confidently trace the journey of their products from farm to garment.
This commitment to transparency aligns with the growing consumer demand for ethically produced goods.
Diverse Applications: Transforming Industries
Canvaloop’s products cater to a wide range of applications, including home textiles, fashion accessories, athleisure, shirting and suiting, denim, and ethnic wear.
With a strong commitment to quality, the company has developed fibers that serve as natural silk replacements and cottonized flax fibers, sourced from local agricultural waste.
As the world increasingly embraces sustainable practices, Canvaloop is at the forefront of this movement, setting a new standard for luxury in textiles.
