Zomato Bans AI Generated Food Images from Menus to Preserve Trust and Quality

Zomato has made a pivotal decision to enhance customer trust and improve user experience by banning the use of AI-generated images of dishes in restaurant menus.

The decision comes after numerous customer complaints about the misleading nature of AI created food images, which have led to an increase in customer dissatisfaction, complaints, and refunds.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter),Deepinder Goyal highlighted the company’s extensive use of AI in various workflows but emphasized that food images should not be among them.

“AI-generated food/dish images are misleading, and we have received numerous customer complaints on this issue,” Deepinder Goyal wrote.

He noted that such images erode trust, resulting in lower ratings and a negative impact on the overall dining experience.

Zomato plans to actively remove AI generated images from restaurant menus by the end of the month, leveraging automation to detect and eliminate such content.

The company is also urging its restaurant partners to invest in real food photography.

To facilitate this, Zomato offers a photo shoot service at a pass-through cost, ensuring that the process is affordable for restaurant owners without adding to Zomato’s revenue.

This ban extends beyond restaurant menus, as Deepinder Goyal also confirmed that Zomato’s marketing team is now prohibited from using AI generated images for promotional purposes.

The announcement has sparked conversations among users on X.

One user, Venkata (@snakeyesV1), raised concerns about multiple restaurants using the same images, which was acknowledged by Zomato’s support team.

They assured that the issue would be passed on to the relevant teams for further action.

Zomato’s recent move to ban AI-generated food images in restaurant menus follows a series of innovative updates aimed at improving user experience.

Just yesterday, CEO Deepinder Goyal introduced a new “Group Ordering” feature, designed to streamline the process of ordering food for gatherings by allowing users to share a link and add items to a single cart.
