Paytm has launched ‘Paytm Solar Soundbox’, India’s first solar-powered soundbox, aimed at providing small merchants with a cost-effective and sustainable solution for digital payments.
The company claims that the innovative device requires minimal sunlight for a quick charge, ensuring uninterrupted service for shop owners, especially in rural and remote areas with electricity shortages.
In an official exchange filing, Paytm stated, “This innovative device requires minimal sunlight for a quick charge that provides full-day power, enabling uninterrupted payments and reliable, consistent service for India’s small shop owners and merchants.”
The soundbox, featuring a built-in solar panel, can charge automatically under sunlight. Additionally, it supports electric charging, ensuring convenience for merchants.
According to the company, even if the device is fully discharged, it can be completely recharged within 2-3 hours of sun exposure.
Equipped with a Paytm QR code, the device allows customers to make UPI and Rupay Credit Card payments seamlessly.
The company has specifically designed this product to cater to small merchants, including hawkers, cart vendors, artisans, craft sellers, flower sellers, and street vendors.
Enhancing Financial Inclusion
Expressing his commitment to empowering small merchants, Paytm CEO Vijay Shekhar Sharma said, “We are committed to empowering India’s small merchants with technology that makes mobile payments seamless and accessible. The Paytm Solar Soundbox is a testament to our commitment to innovation, sustainability, and financial inclusion.”
The soundbox offers high-quality audio payment confirmation via a 3-watt speaker and supports audio notifications in 11 languages, making it accessible to a diverse range of merchants and customers across India.
Paytm’s Ongoing Innovation in Digital Payments
This launch follows Paytm’s introduction of an upgraded soundbox last year, which allowed users to complete transactions using NFC (near field communication) technology by tapping debit or credit cards or scanning a QR code.
The announcement also comes at a time when Paytm is on track to achieve profitability.
Recently, CEO Vijay Shekhar Sharma indicated that the company expects to turn profitable in the next quarter (Q1 FY26), aligning with its management’s guidance.
Furthermore, during its Q3 FY25 earnings call, Paytm’s Chief Financial Officer Madhur Deora stated that the company is expecting to achieve profitability on an adjusted EBITDA basis within one or two quarters.
With the launch of the solar-powered soundbox, Paytm continues to solidify its position as a pioneer in India’s digital payments space while promoting sustainable and inclusive financial solutions for small businesses.
