The Tata Group has launched a transformative initiative with the Bhoomi Pujan ceremony for a new ₹27,000-crore semiconductor assembly and test facility in Jagiroad, Assam.
This marks a significant milestone in India’s semiconductor sector, with the facility expected to be operational by 2025.
The new facility will play a crucial role in packaging around 15 billion semiconductor chips annually.
These chips will be integral to a variety of high-tech products, including electric vehicles, healthcare devices, mobile phones, and laptops, serving global customers.
Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran highlighted the Tata Group’s strategic vision, noting that the facility in Assam is part of a broader plan to enhance India’s role in the global electronics market.
“We’ve developed strong manufacturing capabilities in Tamil Nadu, robust packaging facilities in Karnataka, and now we’re establishing an advanced assembly and test facility here in Assam, along with a chip manufacturing unit in Gujarat,” Chandrasekaran said.
The location of the Assam facility is strategically advantageous, being closer to major semiconductor hubs in Taiwan, Malaysia, Vietnam, and Singapore.
This proximity is expected to bolster India’s competitive edge in the semiconductor industry.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who laid the foundation for the Gujarat and Assam facilities via virtual interaction earlier this year, has been a key supporter of India’s push into semiconductor manufacturing.
Chandrasekaran praised Modi’s leadership, emphasizing that the Tata Group is proud to lead this transformative venture.
The Assam facility is anticipated to generate over 27,000 direct and indirect jobs, providing a significant boost to the local economy.
Tata Electronics CEO & MD Randhir Thakur noted that the company is already training 1,000 Assamese workers at various Tata facilities across India in preparation for the new plant.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma assured full support for the project, expressing gratitude for Tata Group’s investment. “The people of Assam are wholeheartedly behind this endeavor. This project is a unique opportunity and a remarkable gift for our state,” Sarma said.
The facility aligns with the Government of India’s Semiconductor policy and the Government of Assam’s Electronics policy, marking a pivotal step in India’s ambition to become a global leader in semiconductor technology.
Tata Group’s investment is expected to stimulate the development of a robust semiconductor ecosystem in Assam, fostering innovation and growth in the region’s electronics sector.
With this initiative, the Tata Group is setting the stage for India to emerge as a major player in the global semiconductor market, driving both technological progress and economic development.
