Swiggy, the IPO-bound food delivery platform, has officially launched its XL electric vehicle (EV) fleet in Gurugram, aimed at efficiently handling large food orders.
This new service, rolled out on Saturday, comes after a successful pilot run during the festive season.
According to Sidharth Bhakoo, the National Business Head of Swiggy Food Marketplace, the timing of the launch coincides with an increase in demand for bulk orders as families and friends gather to celebrate.
“Food is closely associated with conviviality and mirth, so we are witnessing demand for bulk orders when families and friends get together. The festive season is perhaps the best time to launch this service, when there is gaiety and joy all around,” Sidharth Bhakoo stated.
The XL fleet is equipped with temperature-controlled compartments to ensure food quality during transit.
With the service launch, the fleet already delivered 3,500 meals to election officials at over 580 polling booths in the Gurugram and Badshahpur constituencies during the Haryana state assembly elections.
Sidharth Bhakoo highlighted the environmental benefits of the initiative, noting that the all-electric fleet minimizes the need for multiple delivery trips, thus reducing carbon emissions.
This launch follows Swiggy’s recent introduction of ‘Bolt,’ a 10-minute food delivery service within a 2 km radius, now available in major cities like Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Delhi, Mumbai, and Pune.
Additionally, the company recently unveiled ‘Cafe,’ a service offering snacks and beverages with a 15-minute delivery time.
Despite these innovations, Swiggy reported slower growth compared to rival Zomato in the first quarter of FY25, with its losses widening by 8.31% year-on-year to ₹611 crore.
The foodtech startup is currently preparing for its upcoming IPO, having received shareholder approval to increase the fresh issue size to ₹5,000 crore.
As the XL EV fleet prepares for expansion to cities beyond Gurugram, Swiggy aims to solidify its position in the competitive food delivery market.
